Farewell, sweet Lenny

Lenny died last night after having a stroke. He lived a happy 12 years, 7 of which were shared with our family. He brought us joy and humor every single day.

Thank you to all of Lenny's wonderful DWB friends for some great memories. He is with some of them now.

Transported animals

My mom has been having a lot of fun meeting new dogs and taking them from the shelter to new foster homes.

FALCOR

This is Falcor (named after the Luck Dragon in "The Neverending Story"), who got the new name "Cory." He was at our local shelter and is now being fostered by Indianapolis Great Pyrenees Rescue. Do you think he looks like the original Falcor?

Cory is SO BIG that my mom couldn't fit him in her little car - her friend lent her car and helped drive him to Indianapolis. You can read all about Cory on Petfinder - I hope he finds a new home soon!

SHILOH

Mom's next transport was an Australian Shepherd named Shiloh. He was another big boy and traveled in a crate, so another one of my mom's friends helped her drive him. Poor Shiloh has heartworm and is being treated in foster care, and he got the new name "Babaloo!" You can read more about him at the New Spirit 4 Aussie Rescue website.

BARNABY!

Of course, Mom prefers to transport wire fox terriers whenever she can, and a couple weeks ago she got to drive BARNABY! Isn't he adorable? He loved riding "shotgun" and watching the world go by. His nose prints are still on the window of our car - they need to clean that up so I can leave mine!

I have started a team to help out my fellow dogs that need new homes. Maybe even a few kitty cats too. Our humane association is hosting a "Walk for the Animals" on October 3rd, and I am gathering my friends to raise a few bucks for the animals in the shelter. The MCHA also offers my therapy dog training classes, and has a therapy dog group called VIPaws. It is a good cause and I am happy I can help, because I don't have any money!

I've gotta tell my mom CONGRATULATIONS! She and I have been going to therapy dog classes for almost a year now. This weekend, she completed her human coursework side of things. She even got a nice little certificate! Now we just have to take the evaluation test together to become a registered Pet Partners team through the Delta Society. Our local branch is called VIPaws. One hurdle is that we are waiting for the Delta Society to make a ruling on whether my bald legs are acceptable or not - no leg warmers allowed when visiting!

And congratulations to my dad too! He was in the paper (Herald Times) yesterday. It was not his favorite picture, but Mom and I thought he looked pretty darn cute.

He always looks like he's having a great time when he conducts. His orchestra has a big season coming up.

Mom has also transported some more great dogs - including a fox terrier again! She got asked to transport an alligator named Elvis but declined the opportunity. I'll put information about Barnaby, the WFT, up tomorrow. He needs a good home!

Opera Dog

You might remember that my dad is a conductor and my mom works at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. So we have a pretty musical family. Including me! I like to sing along when my mom plays high notes on the flute.

However, I don't think I come close to the talent of Duca the Dalmation.

Duca belongs to one of the opera/voice teachers at the JSOM, Carlos Montane', and she goes to school with him all the time. (It's against the rules, but, hey, Duca's a diva.) Duca will even stop by in my mom's office for a treat every now and then.

And did I mention? She even speaks German.

I was a very lucky dog this past week. While my family was on vacation, I got to meet some of my oldest and best buddies from Dogs With Blogs -
Maggie & Mitch, and Scruffy, Lacie, and Stan!

The Vacation Dude

Driving back from our week in Maine, we stopped first to meet Maggie and Mitch and their mom, who was super nice and adorable! I think their mom is older than my mom, but their mom looked younger! While the people had a lovely lunch and chatted and admired their gorgeous farmhouse, Maggie and Mitch and I hung out.

Can you believe that I've NEVER met an Airedale in the fur before?

"WHAT?!?"

It's true. I was lucky enough that Maggie and Mitch were the first Airedales I ever got to meet. And they set the standard pretty darn high!

Mitch is an all-around great guy! He could sense that I was a "senior" dog and took it easy with me. He also made total goo-goo eyes at my mom. She was in love.

And the guy can tell a good joke! He was awesome!

And this was no surprise... Maggie was gorgeous! I was glad I dressed up in my party bandana so I would look nice for her.

I gotta tell ya, for such an elegant girl, she has some impressive facial hair. Her beard is great.

Maggie has always been my very special friend because her birthday is exactly two days before mine, in the same year! We are practically "twins"!

Of course, our people wanted us to pose for a picture all together. We did not feel like cooperating.

This was the best shot we got. Maggie has a very "top model" pose, doesn't she? Maybe she should be on Pawject Runway!

Thank you for such a lovely get-together, Maggie and Mitch! I was so happy to finally meet you!

I got to meet Scruffy, Lacie and Stan! Their mom was nice enough to pack them all in the car and meet us EARLY in the morning, even though it was about to rain! She brought us to a nice park in their neighborhood.

Now we are so happy, we do the DANCE OF JOY! Hey!

Here, Scruffy is doing the long-awaited comparison... who has the longer foxy legs? Surprise! It is Scruffy! My NBA-sized legs are just a teeny bit smaller. It might be an optical illusion though, considering my legs are slightly, um, balding, and he has luscious, full legs.

Drumroll, please....

There she was, the incomparable Lacie. Truly a princess and a diva.

Now, I know that Lacie has a lot of admirers, and a lot of love interests, but she was TOTALLY playing hard-to-get with me. I think it's because I was so nervous I forgot to put on my party bandana.

So much for hard-to-get.

I got to say my good-byes to everyone after my mom stopped giving out kisses willy-nilly. My terrier buddies were nice enough to send me off with a goodie bag full of really fun toys! I squeaked them the WHOLE WAY home! My people loved it.

Thanks, Scruffy, Lacie, and Stan - it was so pawesome to meet you! My parents really enjoyed meeting you and your mom.

I can't wait for another road trip - who will I get to meet next?

My cousin Franklin, who is 7 months old, has not yet developed a stomach of steel like I have over the years. He got in to the Easter candy and ate a lot of dark chocolate yesterday! (The cat knocked it off of the high counter top it was sitting on.) He got really sick and had to spend the night in the ICU with the vet. The good news is that he is doing better and he can come home today from the hospital. Please keep your paws crossed for him, and stay away from those human treats!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Happy St. Patrick's Day! I don't have a green bandana to wear, unfortunately. My mom is part Irish so she is enjoying the day. She and my dad are off this weekend to Louisville, KY to see the Kentuckiana Cluster Dog Show!!! WITHOUT me!!

I went to the Vet for a checkup on Saturday. I was expecting my usual "he looks great for his age!" That didn't happen. He did say that my skin looks great - but allergy season is about to start up again with springtime. Anyway, my back legs are a little creaky and sore and my teeth are building up plaque - but I am "too old" to have the anesthesia to get them cleaned. Also, I now have a heart murmur which we will monitor. I don't have any symptoms yet, but in the future it might slow me down a little bit. I may be a distinguished mature dog of 11 1/2 but I think I look great.

Winter blues

It has been a rough new year, hasn't it?
I am missing my friends who have crossed the Rainbow Bridge. I am especially sad that Wally is gone. He was so funny and so smart.

Do you remember I told you that my friend Tobie crossed the Bridge? Well, a couple weeks later, her brother Stoney followed her. He had been really healthy but suddenly cancer developed in his bones.

I am glad that they are together now, but sad too.
My family has several people friends who are fighting cancer right now too, so we are thinking of them. Two are doing quite well but one is just beginning treatment and it is very hard on her. If you have an extra prayer or thought to send their way, that would be pawsome.

But there are happy things going on too.

My new cousin Franklin is getting really big! He's grown to about ten pounds! He's a piebald dachshund. I'm happy that he is healthy and getting along well with his kitty brother and my Uncle Walter, my nana's wiener dog.

Have you been watching the Olympics?

My dad and I have been. He likes watching all the skiers. My mom likes the speed skaters. I am cheering for the United States and Canada mostly, but for nice people from all of the other countries too. My nana gets to go to the Olympics next week for her job! She will get to see some hockey games.

I'm not sure the people are as talented as all of my canine friends, though. Do you remember the 2008 Pawlimpics? A very talented bunch, all of us. For some nostalgia and good will and world peace I am re-posting the original Pawlimpics Bone Relay. There are some friends in there who have gone to the Rainbow Bridge since then; we can remember them fondly and be thankful for all of our DWB friends around the world.

My people left me at the kennel so they could fly away and have fun with their family at Christmas. I'm stuck here at the local "animal country club" until the new year. It's really not so bad but I wish they would hurry back.

I did get a very cool holiday gift before they left - a Dog Spinny by Nina Ottosson!! I have wanted one of these kinds of toys ever since I saw the video of Jackson playing with his Dog Brick.

My mom got to help bring a wire fox terrier home from a shelter. His name is Oscar and you can read all about the organization that got him home - Wire Fox Terrier Rescue Midwest. This "before" picture of him is from their website. I hope he gets a really nice new family.

I met Santa Paws this weekend!

I have been a little bit naughty so I tried not to ask for too much. :) Plus I look like a devil dog with those eyes! My mom was not Santa at the event; she got to be the "line coordinator" - boring!

I also got some sad news today. My old friend Tobie, who used to be my neighbor, is crossing the rainbow bridge today. She got bone cancer that progressed really quickly. Five years ago, she was diagnosed with salivary gland cancer, which went into remission, so I am glad she had those extra happy years with her dad and brother Stoney.

I wish I had more pictures of us together. She is on the left in both pictures.

Have you seen this video on YooToob? My mom and dad BOTH cried. It is a really nice doggie story.

I finished my DWB Christmas cards yesterday and put them in the mail! I hope you get them soon!

My new cousin!

Hello! I am slowly trying to catch up with everyone but I have not made much progress. I hope to over Thanksgiving!

I am very excited because today my new cousin arrives! He will live with my mom's sister and brother-in-law in Connecticut, so I might not get to meet him in person for a little while.

Franklin is a piebald miniature dachshund. "Frankie" for short!

Some funny news - my mom is going to be taking pet pictures with Santa at our local PetCo on December 5th, to raise money for our local animal shelter. She will either be the photographer, the elf, or Santa!!! She doesn't know yet!

Hi everybody! Thanks everybody for asking about how I am doing. It is nice to know I have such nice friends who care about me. I am fully recovered from the incident this summer and I am doing great, but nobody has had time to help me write or read blogs. My mom is taking a class called Organic Chemistry and she is really stressed about it. But that is no excuse. I can't wait to hear about what everyone has been up to because I've missed you so much!

Here it is, my most humiliating picture of the year - in my Halloween costume. Lenny the Lobster. This is the one time of year that my mom gets to dress me up. (That and when Ohio State plays Michigan - I have a special Buckeye sweatshirt for the game.)

You have to admit, I make crustacean look GOOD! But it did take a lot of bribing before I would tolerate a photo session.

I think I would feel a little more dignified if the costume didn't have the googly eyes.

In other news, the nice people at National Geographic sent me a new book that is being released today, called "DogTown." There is a TV show on the National Geographic Channel with the same name, which I had seen and enjoyed before via the magic of Netflix. Dog Town is part of the Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Utah, a very large and successful no-kill facility.

This book gets two big paws up from me! Each chapter introduces a dog that arrived at Dog Town, what help they received, and their story of what happened to them after they arrived. You learn the individual personalities and stories of the dogs, and you also get to know many of the people who work at Dog Town through their interactions. You get very connected in just a few pages!

While the book obviously is praising all of the good work that Dog Town does, it is not afraid to deal with controversial topics as well. Right off the bat, the first chapter is about Michael Vick's pit bulls and efforts to rehabilitate some of them. What impressed me was that when Best Friends disagreed with the Humane Society or PETA, or another group working for animals, they presented the other viewpoints very fairly, explaining both sides of the issue. I appreciated that.

There are a lot of successful adoption stories for dogs that probably wouldn't have had a chance anywhere else. The dogs that make it to Dog Town are very lucky for all of the care that they receive and it's too bad that they don't have room for everybody who needs a new home! It is evident that the people at Dog Town know that every dog is special and deserves a chance to heal. There are definitely some tear-jerker moments.

So I recommend this uplifting book, and the TV show as well if you have not seen it! I liked it so much that I would like to share it with someone. I am a very lucky and thankful dog today.
Over the weekend I got attacked by an aggressive dog. He tried to eat me!
You can see where his jaws were around my neck.

It was really scary, but it could have been a lot worse and I feel very lucky to be okay. Just a couple of little holes.

Plus I got to go to a vet who gushed about how handsome and amazing I look for my "mature and distinguished" (thanks Gus!) 11 years.

It happened very quickly or else I'm sure I could have scared him away first. :)

I'm a tough guy and I'm feeling pretty good, but I'm milking this for all it's worth - treats, a nice cozy spot on the people bed, and lots of belly rubs.

I can't wear my collar for a little while but I should be fine in about a week.

Big Bully Birthday!

I turned 11 years old this past weekend. Thank you to Kirby, Molly and Taffy, Maggie and Mitch, and Keeley and Teagan for their lovely birthday cards!

I had fun playing with all of the kids who were visiting, and I got to have a play date with my friend Rosie. But check it out - I got a 30-INCH BULLY STICK!!! YUM!!!! I have been working on it for a week. I also got a cat-shaped cookie, and a stuffed frog with a furry chest and an Elvis-style lip curl - a little weird! I think it was in the bargain bin!

Marco and Ocho the PWDs are coming tomorrow, so we are going to the park together. I am looking forward to that! And did you see that Bo Obama wrote an op-ed for the New York Times? Maybe he will join Dogs with Blogs next!!

He and his PWD brother Ocho come to visit my friend Rosie because they are her nephews, technically. Marco used to be a show dog until they found out he had a little heart murmur. They're fun pals!

Hello friends! Are you enjoying the summer? Things have obviously been kind of busy here. I HOPE I am going to catch up on everyone's news today.

Things are going well here. In about 6 weeks I am going on vacation to Maine with my people, which will be great. In the meantime, I have been making a few trips to the dog park and hanging out with my friend Rosie. My parents are both working and pretty busy - my dad was gone for three weeks in Colorado, having fun without me. :( My mom is still in school and tearing her hair out. She sheds more than I do!

Check out what came in the mail to my mom's boss. She has to open the mail and there was a letter from Placido Domingo! He is a famous opera singer, and conductor like my dad, but perhaps his greatest work was in ... BEVERLY HILLS CHIHUAHUA!

Placido Domingo played the role of Monte the Chihuahua, a little dog with a big voice. Monte is the dog on the left in the picture. It's a cute movie if you haven't seen it, but all the doggie clothes made me a little nervous. :) I didn't want my mom getting any ideas.

This weekend a whole bunch of my family is coming to visit, including 7 kids! I only get to play with 6 of them, because one is allergic, but they are fun.

My mom is always thrilled when she finds WFT merchandise because there is not a lot of it out there. We fox terriers are rare and special. After seeing some of Cath Kidston's fun products on Jackson's and Eric's blogs, my mom got a couple of items for Christmas:

A cute wallet and keychain! There are some fun matching rain boots on the site that my mom wants now (they call them "Wellies" in England) but they are a tad bit too expensive.

Another cool WFT item she got for Christmas was a cool keychain from Pop Dog Press, made by Simba's HM! She makes cool stuff for all kinds of breeds, not just foxies! This picture is from Simba's website - my (oops, I mean my mom's) keychain is red.

Day at the dog park

Yesterday was a beautiful day and my people brought me to the dog park!! There was a lot of meeting and sniffing and exploring to be done.

When all of a sudden, out of the blue, appearing out of nowhere like a ROCKET...

It was Eddy Rocket! My almost-could-have-been-little-brother. His new parents (who seem very nice) had brought him to burn some energy.

My mom was happy because he seemed to remember her, after the many hours she spent walking him at the shelter when nobody else wanted him.

But I'm still her favorite, of course.

He is a great runner. We had a really good time playing race-and-chase. Usually I only like to play with the big dogs, but Eddy was okay.

I'm happy that I get to play with him, but we don't have to bring him home with us. I hope he comes back to the park a lot.

After a while, Eddy wore me out, so I started doing some grrreeeeaaat roaching.

And more sniffing.

A lot has been going on. My dad turned 210 dog years old this weekend. My mom survived her first semester of full-time work, half-time school. And my dad is going to be starting school again in the fall. They also ran a half marathon and my nana and grandpa visited. Hopefully things will slow down a little bit and I'll have a little more blogging and reading time!

This weekend my goal is to catch up with everyone's news and blogs. I am looking forward to it! I am way behind on things.

I have a question. Do you fetch?

All the talk about Eddy Rocket made my parents look at all the great things about me and what they would look for in another dog. However, there were a few things that they seem to think are less-than-perfect about me. My dad is very disappointed that I won't "fetch."

(Seriously. If this is all they have to complain about me, aren't they pretty lucky?)

My dad always wanted a frisbee dog. Not only will I not chase or catch a frisbee, I will not bring anything to my people. I don't mind going and picking up something, but then it's mine. So my dad wants to know if this is because I am a fox terrier, or if this is because I am who I am.

So, let me know --- DO YOU FETCH?

Well, the landlord ended up solving the issue. I am the only dog allowed! My mom didn't realize that they are not allowed to have more than one dog in the apartment.

The other family did not call back about Eddy Rocket, so let's keep our paws crossed that he finds a really nice new home - and soon! He's been at the shelter a long time.

Update on the potential addition to the family

Wow! You guys are pawesome! Thank you so much for all of the great opinions and advice. It is great to hear so many different viewpoints and it has given my people a lot to think about.

So here's the update. My dad is now more "open" to this whole adoption idea (my mom says it's because she asked St. Francis for intervention!). I don't think he's especially crazy about the idea, but he wants my mom to be happy. However, he is going out of town to guest conduct and will be gone until Sunday. My mom has a big exam and is playing some gigs this weekend. So if we get Eddy, we can't go pick him up until Sunday afternoon, realistically, to make sure he gets a good start with us. Dad said we could go see him on Sunday. My mom went and visited Eddy on Friday, and then went back again today at lunch time to walk him. It turns out someone has now applied to adopt Eddy!!!! My mom was crushed. However, that person has not decided 100% if they want to adopt him or not. So we are waiting to hear.

Eddy Rocket was "dog of the week" on all of the shelter posters around town and he was on the local cable-access TV show "Pets Without Partners," so he has been getting some good publicity.

Lots of drama and no news!! But thank you for the advice!!!

Should I get a little brother?

My mom needs some advice. She walks dogs at the animal shelter sometimes on Sundays. And now she thinks she found me a little brother there. My dad does not think I need a little brother.

This is Eddy Rocket - his picture from petfinder.com. He is a rough-coated Jack Russell/toy fox terrier mix. He is one and a half years old and was found as a stray. He is about half my size. He is an excellent digger and has an impressive vertical jump.

So my mom likes this dog so much that she was crying all week and couldn't sleep, and my reluctant dad finally went to the shelter on Saturday (without telling her) to meet Eddy Rocket. He told her that he went and then later that afternoon we all went over to hang out with him and see what I thought. Eddy is just like me. He's aloof, independent, likes to pee on stuff, and does his own thing. We barely paid any attention to each other because there was plenty to sniff, inside and outside.
I am definitely the alpha dog and Eddy was cool with that. He has a lot of energy but he didn't seem super-crazy like a lot of Jack Russells. He didn't jump up on people and he was even kind of laid back, but not timid.

When I hang out with my friend Rosie, we pretty much ignore each other too, and then flop down and take a nap together. My people always considered me an "only dog" and my dad is very reluctant to change that. My mom only wants a second dog because she loves Eddy Rocket so much. My dad is not crazy about him. (He thinks he's a "fu-fu" dog (no offense to our beloved hamsterrier friend) and not manly enough or something.) He also says his back legs look weird. They kind of look like frog legs because they are long and thin. My dad knows that this means a lot to my mom, which is why he went to the shelter, but he doesn't really want to adopt him. They both know that it would be a really big time investment to train him and give him enough exercise - they had to go through it with me! My dad would have to help a lot because right now my mom's schedule is pretty busy. My mom adores Eddy so much that it maybe clouds her judgment, and she wants to do the right thing, and she wants to be fair to me. After all, she has loved me for five years.

My dad brings me to work with him a lot, which is great, but he doesn't think he could do that with two dogs, and he doesn't want to leave Eddy crated at home.

Do I want a Mini-Me? What do you two-dog families think? Is my mom being disloyal to me and to wire fox terriers in general?

My mom has big plans for me tonight. We are going to a class to see if I am cut out to be a therapy dog! I will give a full report. The last time I took a class was puppy obedience school (with my former people) and I flunked out.

Unfortunately I have not had a chance to read anyone's blog in ages and I am so sorry. I can't wait to find out what's been going on with everyone. Maybe if my mom would stop taking her classes and stop dragging me around to classes she would have time to help me with the computer. :(

I am pleased to announce (OK, brag) that my photo won 4th place in one of the Fox Terrier Network's photo contest categories! I won a lovely book about fox terriers. Congratulations to all of the other WFTs and SFTs that won!

Excellent Movie Review!

Dreamworks has released a new movie called "Hotel for Dogs" and you should all send your people to go see it! Especially if you have kid people, but the grown-ups would enjoy it too.

The biggest dog in the movie is named Lenny (in between the kids at the top of the poster). Need I say more?

There are some very cool feeding and entertainment inventions for dogs that are the best part of the movie. There is a lot of product placement for Pedigree food, which you might notice, but I think that's okay because they are supposed to be donating some money to help shelter dogs for each ticket sold. The dogs eat Pedigree food, one of the characters wears a "Dogs Rule" t-shirt (their motto) and they even play part of that really sad TV commercial...with the sad-looking shelter dogs saying, "I don't know how I got here...I just want to go home." They always play it during the dog show competitions on Animal Planet. I don't eat Pedigree but I think that's really nice that they're helping shelter dogs.

My mom has been walking shelter dogs on the weekends! I am proud of her but I wish she'd take me along with her. She really smells interesting when she gets home. She is also taking two classes now, so she is super-busy in addition to her job. She finally decided that she is going to try to study to be a veterinarian! I am super-proud of her for that, but I have noticed that she likes to poke and prod me a little bit more than usual. I hope she learns how to be a NICE V-E-T!!! She is ten years older than all of the people in her classes (and older than all of the graduate student associate instructors!) and she is a little stressed with all of her homework. This means I have not been able to catch up on everyone's blogs but I hope to soon.

I think you all know how much I love to pilfer food from my people when they're not around, and how I will eat anything if it smells good.

My dad just got a bread machine so he's been experimenting with different recipes.

One was raisin bread. I know raisins are bad for me, but while they were out I just couldn't resist.

However, today was a Lenny "first." Here's the whole wheat bread:

This is how they came home and found it - on the floor but NOT EATEN!!! I had two bites and passed it up.

My dad thought I must be sick but my mom knew better - she had tasted the bread too...

It was five years ago today that my people brought me home and adopted me.

They looked a little bit younger and skinnier back in 2004.
The new year is a time for reflection and planning. I'm lucky to have had many adventures and made so many friends over the last five years, especially since joining DWB!

My resolution for this year is: Keep more up-to-date blogging and reading my friends' blogs! I can't wait to tell you all about, and read about, all of the adventures that 2009 will bring.

Happy Birthday to my mom today!

Movie update: only one paw up for "Lenny the Wonder Dog." It's a good kids' movie, but not the most interesting film I've ever seen. And Lenny certainly didn't look enough like me.

On Sunday my mom decided to put up the Christmas tree. My dad had a "gig" so he wasn't home to help her. I had to be her assistant. (My people have been playing a lot of Christmas gigs lately but that is slowing down now. I hope they have earned enough extra cash to give me LOTS of presents!!)

I put it at the top of my Netflix queue. It's funny, I don't remember anyone videotaping me for a documentary about my life. And the dog on the cover doesn't really look like me. Hmmm....

My friend Verdi celebrated his 14th birthday at the beach in Brazil! Verdi is quite the ladies' man. He spent his time hanging out with all of his female friends while Gaucho made margaritas. I even braved getting wet and went surfing! You can read all about the party at their blog. It is a very interesting blog because Verdi and Gaucho write in two languages! My mom studied Spanish in high school so sometimes she tries to help me make comments in Spanish. I think they probably don't make much sense.

It was a really fun party - muchas gracias a mi amigo Verdi!

I have started to receive Christmas cards from around the world! I am so excited! I will post about them soon. I sent my international cards right before Thanksgiving, and the USA cards should be going out tomorrow, so they will arrive soon! What a big project. My paws are covered in glue.

Animal Planet here I come

My mom had a busy Saturday. First, she went and got a haircut. She came home kind of unhappy because the hairdresser gave her bangs that she didn't like.

I like them, however! Because all of the cool women on Animal Planet have bangs too. Like Victoria Stilwell of "It's Me or the Dog" and Annemarie Lucas of "Animal Precinct"! I figure this is just the first step to getting ME on Animal Planet as her animal sidekick. (Or her as my human sidekick!)

After her haircut, she went and volunteered at the animal shelter for the first time. I am proud of her. She walked a bunch of dogs and only one pit bull escaped from its kennel. She had to chase it around and she was really embarrassed. I hope she gets the hang of it soon.

Tomorrow I am off to a new place to board - an animal "country club!" Sounds pretty nice. I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving and that you get to eat lots of turkey!

St. Louis Dog Museum!

I am so behind on blogging that I haven't posted the pictures from the DOG MUSEUM!

My parents went to St. Loulis for their fifth anniversary, which was way back this summer.

Gussie and his Muzzer gave them some great advice about fun places to go and they had a wonderful time. I got to stay with my lovely lady friend Rosie. Back a while ago on Gus's blog, he posted about the AKC Dog Museum near St. Loulis, and my mom talked my dad into going. This was in exchange for going up in the Arch, which was miserable for my mom because she is very claustrophic and afraid of heights.

My mom loved it! They had tons of wire fox terriers and my dad took pictures of all of them.

My dad liked the pug orchestra.

I didn't dress up for Halloween this year, so this is an old picture of me. I liked it because it reminded me of my favorite candidate.

This morning my dad took me to the early-voting poll place. He and my mom already voted back in October. But there was a HUGE line that wrapped around the block outside. He took me around to practice being a therapy dog of sorts - letting the bored and stressed people pet me. :) They liked it a lot! (How could they not?) Tomorrow there are going to be musicians serenading people in the long lines here in town. Maybe if you have a minute tomorrow you could go be a patriotic polling place petting pooch! Just remember to be non-pawtisan.

And no, it's not a flea collar!

My mom got me a new collar because it is football season. It's for the Ohio State Buckeyes! I hope this means that she won't make me wear my Ohio State sweatshirt every Saturday. My people went to OSU for their undergrad and my mom is a huge football fan, even if this isn't their best season. I heard that Joe-Paw's team beat them last week.

The collar says "Ohio" and the I is dotted with a little Buckeye and leaf.
It is supposed to look like the "Script Ohio" that the Marching Band does on the football field. They went to the first game of the season in Columbus back in August and the band did four Script Ohios at once!

Since they are musicians they cheer for all of the bands, even the opposing team's band. They had a really good time at the game. And I have to say, my new collar looks way better than their goofy football clothes.

I am still practicing my trick for the last game of the season - I get a cookie if I growl when someone says "Michigan." Also, very time Ohio State gets a TOUCHDOWN I get a cookie too. But not for field goals. Don't you think I think I should get one for every point?

I have fleas. My mom was giving me a bath yesterday and found a couple of them. I am so embarrassed.

The vet says I’m not supposed to use Frontline (because of my skin) unless I actually already have bugs or fleas, but not as a preventative measure. So that strategy is not working so great. I got the Frontline yesterday.
My mom thinks they came from the woods by our new place, and not from staying at the home of my lovely Lhasa Apso lady friend, Rosie, on Saturday night. ;) Hopefully I didn’t give them to her!

I wish I could say that was the reason that I have not blogged in weeks and weeks but it’s not. My whole family has just been really busy and no one helps me on the computer. My mom is all excited about the presidential election and is volunteering and my dad is doing all sorts of musical stuff. I’m really behind on everything and I have no idea what’s going on with my DWB buddies, and I know I’ve missed a bunch of birthdays in the meantime. So I am sorry for that! I hope I can catch up soon.

In the human Olympics, there was one athlete who stood out from the crowd, rose to the challenge, and took home more medals than any other athlete in history - Michael Phelps.

In the Paw-limpics, one dog stood head and shoulders above the rest. Only one could compare to the great Michael Phelps (as she proved on her blog!).

Congratulations to Pacco de Mongrel, who won the most medals at the 2008 Summer Paw-limpic Games!

Pacco won a total of six medals (two bronze, two silver, and two gold) and an honorable mention award! She is truly a great athlete.

Her Hurdles (above) earned her a bronze medal.

She also won a bronze medal in the Gymnastics event.

Her Diving entry received an honorable mention.

Her impassioned Howling earned her the silver medal.

Her second silver medal was in the Begging Face event.

Pacco was a gold medalist when it came to being a Nuisance.

And of course, she was the champion gold medalist in her favorite and best event, the HIGH JUMP!

In recognition of her outstanding athletic achievement in the 2008 DWB Summer Pawlimpic Games, Opy and Charlie and their people behind Dogs With Blogs (Greg and Brooke) are awarding Pacco with a pawesome Dogs With Blogs t-shirt! How cool is that?

Pacco is a shining example of all of the talent of our Pawlimpic athletes. Congratulations and thank you to everyone for being a part of this great DWB event!

I moved!

So, during the Paw-Limpics, my family moved!

We used to live in a crummy little 'student' apartment. We lived there for four years. We were only supposed to live there two years, but my humans got stuck in Indiana after my dad graduated from grad school.

Everything went wrong with the old apartment. The landlords pulled a switcheroo when we moved in and we got no dishwasher. (They installed one eventually.) There was a pile of dirt - literally - in the closet, and some sketchy items that I won't describe sitting around in the apartment. I got fleas. And that was just the first weekend. The closet flooded and never stopped dripping. The neighbors upstairs had a fire, filling our apartment with smoke and making everything smell bad. And the washer and dryer were in the basement, which was constantly flooded and moldy and infested with large insects. Plus you had to go outside and down some slippery steps to get to it. I was too scared to venture down there.

But it was cheap and only a mile away from school. My people kept being hopeful that a big opportunity would come along and that we would be moving away before too long. Just one more year. Just one more year. But we couldn't take it anymore. So now we live in a nice apartment, for however long we will stay in Indiana. My people got OK jobs, so for the moment there is nothing else better out there.

The new place has a big kitchen, so I have more room to maneuver and scavenge for dropped things while my dad is cooking. There are two bathrooms, which is convenient if I am thirsty and away from my water bowl - they both have large white drinking bowls. There is a big long hallway that I get to do laps in (go Lenny go!) for exercise. And, I have kind of a backyard. We have a little patio which leads out on to the grass and to the woods. It's really nice and there are a ton of great roaching spots. I think my people are a lot happier there too.

Now if they would just finish unpacking!

I have a new relative!

My nana got a new dog to be a brother for my Uncle Walter, the weenie dog. My grandpa was away for a week and came home to a big surprise! Nana went to the pound and found Andy, a Pomeranian mix.

They don't know how old Andy is, but he's a senior like me. He's somewhere between 8-10 years old. He was a stray and the people at the pound had named him "Mr. Winkers." How undignified.

So my nana changed his name to Andy, which is short for Anderson....

I'm not afraid of new and different things. I recently made new NOMSS friends over at the Cat Realm, when they graciously asked me to be a dog judge of the I DARE YOU ALL challenge! (Check it out, I dare you!) I'm even allergic to cats but I was very pleased to make my new cat friends.

Synchronized Teams Event

Athletes were invited to submit "Synchronized" entries for any of our events. This involves a pair or team of dogs doing the same activity together, in unison. We received a wide variety of excellent entries!

This event honors achievement in Barking, Singing, and Howling. We are all very good at being noisy, and these athletes really exhibit champion noise-making.

When Bolo speaks, everyone listens! Congratulations on the gold medal!

Pacco: the howler heard 'round the world. Congratulations to our silver medalist!

Bronze medalist and tenor terrier Eric is singing the "Nessun Dorma" aria from the opera Turandot. Translation of Nessun Dorma: None shall sleep. You got that right, with all this noise! Eric, you are a true Paw-varotti!

The judges also awarded Izzie an honorable mention, who is surely saying something about his jean jacket - he either loves it or hates it! (I think it's cute, Izzie!)

I Double Dog Dare You - another great contest!

I am pleased to have been asked by my new friends at The Cat Realm to be a judge for the "Get Involved Dare," in honor of Anastasia. I am the only dog judge on the panel, which is quite an honor.

(Don't worry; you know cats make me sneezy and itchy, but not online!)

One year ago at this day Anastasia went to the bridge. And instead of mourning her death today we decided to celebrate her life by holding another Dare, a tradition at The Cat Realm that she invented with her pink wig challenge.

We call this fourth Dare the "Get Involved Dare" because we want each and everyone of you to come up with a Dare of your own. You can Dare us to do anything - no violence of course! And try to keep it kitten friendly...
A panel of judges will vote on the best Dare and the winner will be the next Dare for everybody to do!

So, David Neville wasn't on TV last night because my mom was time-zone challenged. He ran this morning at 9:20 a.m. our time, which is 9:20 p.m. BEIJING time. So we know the results! But I won't give it away. He'll be on TV tonight. Sorry for the incorrect time info!

The People Olympics

Caught up on all the Pawlimpics news? Are you sad that Michael Phelps' events are over? Need someone to cheer for in the People Olympics tonight?

The men's 400 meter track and field final is on tonight around 9:20 p.m. And one of the Americans in the final is David Neville, who is a recent graduate of the music school where my dad got his degree and where my mom works! So we are cheering for him.

Also, a lot of the Dogs' Choice Award polls are REALLY close, so if you haven't voted yet, let your voice be heard! The winners will be announced on the final day of the Pawlimpics.

Earlier in the competition we saw the winners of the individual sleeping event. Today we give out the awards for excellence in team and synchronized sleeping.

Just 36 hours ago, when a tropical storm was sloshing through South Florida, our very own Jake found a new niche for himself as an amateur weatherdog. To quote this enterprising wire-haired fox terrier, "We don't want to take anyone's job in these difficult economic times -- but, looking at the most recent weather map, we don't see any signs of the heavy rain and winds predicted for the next 24 hours here." Turns out he was right!!

In honor of Jake's outstanding service to the meteorological world, I want to send him a big "At Work" Pawlimpics shout-out. While his new-found career came after the deadline for submitting entries to the contest, we simply can't let his talents go unrecognized. We all now know who to turn to in the face of threatening weather and those scary thunderstorms!

Not only do our DWB athletes possess many skills and do many tricks, they also serve as workers in many different ways, helping humans and the community! I was amazed at all of the great work that the athletes do.

Sumo earned the gold medal for his work as a Community Watchdog.

Toffee's dedicated medical work earned her the silver medal!

Oorvi's beautiful newspaper retrieval collage earned the bronze medal.

And the judges awarded Noah the Lumberjack an Honorable Mention award.

Today the Paw-Limpics features two events that dogs EXCEL at, though our humans might not appreciate our talents. So it is important for us dogs to acknowledge each other's skills. The first event is Making a Mess!

Dozer took home the gold medal with his impressive green pillow fuzz stuffing display.

Maggie looks like she got caught in the act - of winning the silver medal!

Mitch looks so innocent, doesn't he? How could his humans be mad at him - especially since his mess earned him a bronze medal!

Personally, I hate getting wet. I am not a happy swimmer. But many dogs are, and these are the best of the best.

Kirby won the gold medal! I think his life preserver was made of the same Speedo material that the USA swimmers and Michael Phelps wear. Too bad those humans don't have a 4x100 Dog Paddle event.

Our silver medalist Asta is swimming somewhere in a hurry! I think always-stylish Asta was swimming to the Statue of Liberty to give her some fashion advice. (Maybe try orange instead of that green color.) Congratulations!

And the bronze goes to Asta-Marie - now this is my kind of swimming! It was a hot day so she curled up in the water to cool off. The photo was submitted both by her son Dewey Dewsterand by her friends Lacie, Stanley, and Scruffy, so they can all share credit for the award.

I think this is one of the best events of the Games because the entries were so creative. Vote for your favorite for "Dogs' Choice" in the sidebar! Enjoy!
