Go Fetch!

This weekend my goal is to catch up with everyone's news and blogs. I am looking forward to it! I am way behind on things.

I have a question. Do you fetch?

All the talk about Eddy Rocket made my parents look at all the great things about me and what they would look for in another dog. However, there were a few things that they seem to think are less-than-perfect about me. My dad is very disappointed that I won't "fetch."

(Seriously. If this is all they have to complain about me, aren't they pretty lucky?)

My dad always wanted a frisbee dog. Not only will I not chase or catch a frisbee, I will not bring anything to my people. I don't mind going and picking up something, but then it's mine. So my dad wants to know if this is because I am a fox terrier, or if this is because I am who I am.

So, let me know --- DO YOU FETCH?

Lenny,

We think we're pretty cool wires -- but no, WE DO NOT FETCH!!!

If one of us is alone with our humans, we will sit, catch a toy, and (maybe) bring it back to them to play a few rounds. This is impossible if the two of us are together!!

But that's it. No frisbees. No tennis balls lobbed in the air.

Hope this helps convince your dad that you are not alone in not fetching!!

(Ask him about barking!!!)

I don't fetch. It is not in my contract.

Teka doesn't fetch either. It is against her nature to give anything back or share.

My dad wants dogs who will fetch also. Muzzer tells him it is not in our fine terrier bloodlines. We just kill the damn vermin...would you really want it brought back to you? It isn't a duck or anything you want to eat, right?

Hope this helps

I LOVE FETCH! It's one of my favorite games! I don't fetch sticks, but balls & stuffies I'll retrieve all day! I'll bring them to you by name too, if theres a treat waiting for me! BOL! My Mommy got me to do it by throwing the ball or stuffie across the floor & then running & getting it, waving it in my face("You want it Eduardo?!" she would shout.)then repeating until I got it, when I picked it up she would chase after me & say."Gimme that ball!" finally she would stop chasing me & I would run up to her & she would say,"drop it!" I'd drop the ball & the whole process would continue or I'd just bring her the ball when she says Bring it to Mommy.(which I do now)Fetching is cool, but your still cool even if you don't fetch!

My frisbee is some where in the Atlantic Ocean. I fetch some times, mostly at home; when i go to the park I just fetch a couple of times and then I just run.

Great question. Of the three permanent dogs we have living with us, one will fetch and retrieve, one will fetch and play "keep away" and one looks from you to the ball disdainfully with a "you want me to put THAT in my MOUTH?!" look on her face.

Most of our foster dogs don't know how to either. We have to teach them.

Hi Lenny!
I LOVE playing fetch! But I am always very reluctant to return the fetched object to my dad. He has to play with 2 toys - I drop one toy when he throws another. :)
Have a great weekend!

Lenny.I know your pain. Daddy square has the same fixation for throwing and catching with me.

The leggededs have been teaching me fetch for TWO YEARS, harrr!!! By clickers. And a lot of bribery.I've been stubbornly resisting for far longer. (And we all know I'll be the winner)

I'll fetch inside the house. A few times. For rewards only.Until something more interesting catches my eye.

Outside? One go.Before I'm off to sniff out something far more interesting. Frisbee? Forget it.Catch? Only if I have my mouth open and don't have to move.

Must be a foxy thing. Though Mom has been know to gawp open mouthed (very unbecoming) when she see's Scruffy dude playing frisbee and catch...

Keep resisiting Lennie!

We don't fetch either! We totally agree with you - if it's in our mouth then it belongs to us and we do not have to give it back unless we want to!

Love ya lots

Nope! We don't fetch either! Yep, we go get stuff, but NEVER bring it back to the hoomans! Maybe it's a terrier thing!

Ahem...well,

Scruffy blushes furiously...

I FETCH. And well...it's the thing I love to do best...(besides eat poop...) I fetch balls and will do so for a solid two hours...by the end of it, Bruvver gave up throwin'...I LOVE IT...it's my work. Our last foxie fetched too...inside...he wouldn't look at a toy outside. It took me a couple of months to figure out how to track a frisbee and another couple to catch it...And...(he blushes even more...) I'm mad good at it.

Stan will fetch outside if I'm not out there. And then it seems more like a duty. (He's one of those "pleaser" dogs...dales...bah....)

Lacie wouldn't fetch if her life depended on it. But...she LOVES to chase me when I fetch and either bite my shoulder or latch onto MY FRISBEE and we bring it back together...makin' her look good and all...

Yep...as for the men in the family bein' obsessed bout fetchin'...it happens here too...I have some habits that hoomans aren't fond of...eatin' poop, snarlin' when ya look at my paws, much less touch them...farting, um...a weak bladder...and usually a really full one...BUT...IT MATTERS NOT.

Because I FETCH. The hooman males here say I'm their favorite dog...HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAA! I try. Hmm...perhaps I'll do a postie on this soon...it seems like other wire foxies aren't quite so obsessed. Mumsie started me with a tennis ball the day I came home...7 weeks...and I brought it right back...must be hard wired or somethin'...get it Lenny...hard wired!!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHA!

Anyway...Mumsie's sad for your mom bout the little JRT, but it sounds like he did get a new home. Funny...he waited all that time and then everybody wanted him...he musta read The Secret or somethin'....

Love ya lots, Dude...

And ya know what...we think ur peeps ADORE YA whether you fetch or not...we do!!!

Pawslaps,

Scruffy

I might fetch for a few throws, but I lose interest fast unless it's one of my SNAX toys. Tell your dad if he wants a fetching dog he should get a frigging retriever. WE are way above that inane, stupid activity.

Hi, Lenny!
I don't fetch either!
Like you, I can go to pick up something my mom throws away but when I come back I don't give it to her! Mine! Mine!
Tell your Dad not to worry. You have many other qualities!

I can chase and run after stuff but whether I bring them back to ANYONE is another thing. I don't fetch and return stuff.

I can sit but not shake hands with ANYBODY.

Now I want to know if you kiss and drool at strangers? 'Cause my big brother Bogart does all the time!

Unknown said...

OF COURSE I FETCH!

But do I bring the ball back immediately and drop it politely at Mommy's feet? Not always. More like when I feel like it. Sometimes I need to give it a good chew or rinse it off in a dog dish first.

Fetchin' rocks!

Your pal,

Petey

hey Lenny! we are fetching fiends! we lovelovelovelove to fetch, and better yet, we retrieve! we actually bring stuff back so then our mom can throw it again and we bring it back and she throws it again and on and on... fetching is soooooo much fun! sometimes it even drives her crazy and she says enough already.

BUT! we are bred to be bird dogs and bird dogs fetch birds after the mean hunter kills them. to be very very clear - we only fetch TENNIS BALLS. not that we wouldn't like to fetch a bird, but our mom would probably disown us and that wouldn't be so good.

BUT! maybe you are not the fetching kind of dog. you are a terrierorist, and you have some other talents. maybe you can learn to fetch, but you have some other natural ability that makes you special and unique and loveable. okay? don't feel bad if you don't fetch.

Lenny,
Of course I fetch I might not bring it back but mom throws that ball and I'm OFF like a rocket to get the ball, stick, bottle, frisbee whatever it was I thought she threw for me. But bring it back nah I think she should chase me for that.

Hi Lenny:

Oscar: Yes.
Ethel: Obsessively yes.
Wally: Meh.

I like to kill stuffies, mostly. I would be willing to send your dad the peppy sheppys for fetching purposes. Sometimes, though, dogs learn things from other dogs. My sissy never played with stuffies until Oscar showed up, for example. So you never know--you could have a fetch or two in ya.

Lenny,
I'm actually just beginning to understand FETCH. (BTW, my girl says GO GET IT instead of FETCH). I'm not perfect at it yet though. We play with a tennis ball. I will GO GET IT and bring it back to my girl about 3 or 4 times before I get bored. Also, I only like to pick up clean, new tennis balls. If it's muddy or wet or if it's been in another dog's mouth, then I don't want it. Don't feel bad about not fetching, Lenny. I think it's overrated. You're pawesome enough as you are.
Woof,
Keeley
PS My girl thinks the fact that you run with your mom by far makes up for not fetching. My girl would like it if I could run with her without killing her (I have this habit of stopping right in front of her and making her fall). Heck, she'd be happy if I just walked nice. I don't do that too well either. I guess I'm lucky I'm so handsome.

Hey, Lenny!

Glad to hear that Eddy Rocket found himself a good fam. Bummer it couldn't work out to be yours (although I'm sure you're MORE than enough dog for your peeps)!

I will play my own version of fetch. Usually I'll go pick up whatever is thrown and come back to my girl, but then I want her to get it from me herself, and she has to tug with me for awhile too. Eventually I'll give up the ball, flamingo, whatever I'm playing fetch with. Also, I sometimes chase around the yard for a VERY long time. Sometimes I wear her down & she leaves me alone.

Hope that helps.

Goober love,
Stnaley

Well, you are a terrier do that means you were not born to fetch. Well, Chloe & I are Retrievers. Chloe is a natural at it but I however never did like to fetch! I was TAUGHT to fetch. Yea.

I will fetch a toy, but only for two or three throws, and only if I initiate. If the girl tries to start a game of fetch, I just look at her like "why did you throw my toy?". BLU might go get the toy the girl threw, but then she takes it and hides it so the girl won't throw it again.

Hi Lenny,

My Daddy defines fetching as I'll go get it, but I don't bring it back, that's retrieving which I DON'T do. My cousin Molly who is a beautiful Black Lab will retrieve all day until the cows come home. I like to run after her when she chases sticks and balls. I think it is much more fun if the humans come and chase me to get back whatever it is they threw. Mom and Dad say it makes it difficult to exercise me. I believe fetch should be a family activity, why should I be the only one doing the running? Hehehe!!!

So NO I don't fetch.

Well, I'm a little over 2 yrs old and an Airedale, & I live to play fetch. If I'm at a dog park and other dogs look interested in the ball I will not give it up to anyone. If it's just Hootie and me I am an expert fetcher, them I drop it and sit. Then I go get ready for the next pitch. I love fetch.
X-BRD
I just like to chase other dogs that play fetch. So far I've shown no desire to fetch. Only chase!

Yep we are catching up as well...FETCH???? What the heck is that??? Tennis ball? good for ripping the skin off really... frisbee? what the heck is that?? Seems to be a theme amongst the square ones here...Love A+A

Am I the odd one out? Yep, I"m a wire that fetches. But wait. Does that mean I have to take it back? Then no, I probably don't qualify. And Fergi? Well, she goes after leaves and bits of paper that blow in the wind ... but she runs with them. No way will she bring them to a humine hand. And she doesn't have a clue (YET!) about tennis balls or frisbees or anything else like that. I guess, now that I think of it, neither of us fetch. That's all right.

Fetching is really over rated. My name is Stanley and I'm a wirefox and I don't fetch AT ALL either. I think most terriers aren't interested in fetching. I might like fetching something alive like a little rat or maybe a fox, but my people live in a city so that isn't going to happen anytime soon. You sound like a great dog. Don't worry about the fetch thing.
